ICON:

ICON is all about helping people who care for babies to cope with crying.

ICON stands for…

*I – Infant crying is normal

*C – Comforting methods can help

*O – Its OK to walk away

*N – Never, ever shake a baby

Research suggests that some lose control when a baby’s crying becomes too much.  Some go on to shake a baby with devastating consequences.  ICON is a website that provides advice and information for parents about how to comfort a crying baby and how to cope when it goes on for a long time. Please speak to someone if you need support such as your family, friends, Midwife, GP or Health Visitor.

Prostate Testing

What is it?

(PSA) test is a blood test that can help diagnose prostate problems and is offered to men aged 50 years and over. PSA levels can be raised in a number of conditions, such as a urinary infection, an enlarged prostate, prostatitis or prostate cancer. Most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any signs or symptoms. That’s why it’s important to know your risk.

Risk Checker-  www.prostatecanceruk.org

What to know prior to your appointments

When you have a PSA test, you should not have:

  • An active urine infection.
  • Ejaculated in previous 48 hours.
  • Exercised heavily in the previous 48 hours.
  • Had a prostate biopsy in the previous six weeks.

When taking blood for PSA testing:

  • Ensure the specimen will reach laboratory in time for the serum to be separated within 16 hours
  • Send samples to an ISO accredited laboratory
  • Repeat the test if not taken in ideal circumstances

If you’re already suffering from prostate cancer, there are many organisations that can help. Resources such as ‘Cancer Chat’ can help you to speak to other people in your situation, and speak to someone else who understands how you’re feeling. If you and your family are worrying about other issues such as money, childcare or changes to your house, there are ways in which you can be helped. You can also find support groups for prostate cancer near you.

Baby Check app – Lullaby Trust

The Lullaby Trust has developed an app to support parents of babies to know whether their child needs help from a medical professional. Using a series of questions, the app will guide parents, using a scoring system, to help them know how unwell their baby is and will then direct the parents to seek appropriate support. https://www.lullabytrust.org.uk/safer-sleep-advice/baby-check-app/

Caring for relatives

The Carents Room is a website designed to support people who find themselves caring for their parents. This might be during a time in their lives when they’re also caring for their children, and working too. Providing information and links to help, the website aims to reduce the burden on those having to navigate health and care systems for the first time.

If you’re caring for someone, you may be entitled to financial support. You can find out more about how the government supports carers by checking the government website. https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

Norovirus

Norovirus is known as the winter vomiting bug. We often see an increase in viruses during the winter and this is also true for norovirus. Regular hand-washing and good hygiene, including during food preparation, is one of the ways we can help to make sure norovirus doesn’t spread. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/norovirus/

If you do find you catch norovirus, the symptoms should be better within a few days, though for some people the illness may be more severe or may last longer than normal, which may require medical treatment. You can find out more about preventing the spread of norovirus by using the government website. https://ukhsa.blog.gov.uk/2022/11/1…-you-catch-it-and-helping-to-stop-the-spread/
