Maternity Services

New Mothers should consult their doctor to confirm their pregnancy and arrange their ante-natal care. Most patients are referred to the Maternity Department of the local Alexandra Hospital, and the maternity care is shared with hospital staff and the community midwives.

The doctors in the practice like to examine new babies when they are eight weeks old, combining this with Mum’s post-natal check. The baby also has its first immunizations at this visit.

Wound Care

We are able to assess and manage many kinds of wounds, from scratches to leg ulcers, to post operative wounds.  This service is completely nurse led, you don’t need to see a doctor if you have a wound or an infection from a bite or scratch, as Practice Nurse Samantha Giles is able to fully assess prescribe if appropriate.

Minor Surgery/ Cryotherapy

We offer a wide range of minor surgical procedures at the surgery.  You should consult a doctor about any moles, lumps or bumps that concern you, as these may be suitable for removal at the surgery. Cryotherapy is for the treatment of warts, small skin tags and verrucae. The affected area is frozen with liquid nitrogen. This treatment is not recommended for children under 10 years.

Respiratory Clinic

The respiratory clinic is run by Specialist Nurse Practitioner, Elaine James.

The purpose of the clinic is to regularly review our asthma and COPD patients so that, as far as possible, we can prevent serious asthma attacks.  We encourage any patient who is receiving medication for asthma or COPD to attend the clinic.

About Asthma

You can get asthma at any age. If you have asthma your airways don’t work
as well.

• You cough a lot.
• You wheeze.
• It is hard to breathe.
• Your chest feels tight

You might have all of these symptoms or you might only have some of them.

Some things can make your asthma worse, which are called triggers.
Everyone has different triggers, such as pollen, stress, animals, colds and changes in weather.

About COPD

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a general term which includes the conditions chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Chronic bronchitis or emphysema can cause obstruction (narrowing) of the airways. COPD is usually caused by smoking. Symptoms include cough and breathlessness and inhalers are commonly used to ease symptoms. COPD is common in the UK. It mainly affects people over the age of 40.

Contraception

Appointments and advice are available with any doctor or Family Planning nurse at any time during surgery hours. As with all our services, it is completely confidential.

Teenagers are welcome, again in total confidence. Emergency contraception is available and should be started within 72 hours.

Condoms are available from reception at any time.

Access the NHS contraception guide for futher support here.

Vaccination advice and dates:

The flu and COVID-19 vaccinations are available annually on the NHS to help protect adults and children at risk of flu/COVID and its complications.

Guidelines for Your Flu Vaccination Appointment:

Health Precautions: Do not visit the practice if you have any of the following symptoms: fever, cough, loss of taste or smell, a recent positive COVID-19 test result, or are awaiting a COVID-19 test result. Please cancel and rearrange your appointment if you experience any of these symptoms.

Arrive Promptly: Please arrive as close to your appointment time as possible.

Dress Appropriately: Wear clothing that allows easy access to your arm for the vaccination, such as a short-sleeve top. Please remove any jackets, coats, or jumpers while you wait.

Cancellation: If you are unable to attend, please cancel your appointment as soon as possible. These clinics are extremely popular, and this allows us to offer the slot to someone else.

Cervical Smear Testing

Why should I have this?

Having a smear test is really important to book from the age of 25, as this picks up early warning signs of any problems, giving time for a safe and effective cure. We recommend that all our female patients should have a smear performed every 3 years from age 25 – 49 and every 5 years from 50 – 64. The purpose of this test is to prevent cancer of the cervix. This is a simple, quick and painless test to check the health of your cervix and the nurses try to make the procedure as easy as possible. This appointment doesn’t take very long at all, so please do not be put off from having it done.
